The town of Litomyšl in East Bohemia has inaugurated a modernist chapel, the Chapel of St. Joseph Calasanz, created using 3D concrete printing. This nine-meter structure incorporates geometric, optical, and acoustic principles to enhance its spiritual ambiance.
Modern Architecture in Litomyšl
On Sunday, Litomyšl officially opened the Chapel of St. Joseph Calasanz, a striking example of modern architecture created through 3D concrete printing. Designed by acclaimed architect Petr Hájek, the chapel stands nine meters tall beside the Černá hora forest park, contributing to the town's architectural landscape.
The chapel measures three meters by three meters at its base and was constructed in sections using a 3D concrete printer. The design allows sunlight to illuminate the interior during solstices, while geometric and acoustic principles have been integrated to enhance the contemplative atmosphere.
During the unveiling ceremony, which included activities for children and a concert by Pavel Helan, Hájek emphasized the chapel's purpose as a space for thanksgiving for education's contributions to Litomyšl. The town invested CZK 1 million into this project, which is part of the broader Cíle cest (Destinations) initiative aimed at promoting exploration of local architecture.
The chapel honors St. Joseph Calasanz, who founded the Piarist order and championed free education for underprivileged children. This installation marks the fourth in the Destinations project, with plans for a fifth destination already underway for 2027, designed by architects from the Čtyřstěn studio.
